PoinsettiasPoinsettias

Poinsettias in stock now!

Our poinsettia plants come from Pentland Plants, Lasswade, Edinburgh and the main reason our Poinsettias are excellent quality comes down to a few points.

Grown in Scotland using biomass heating means they have the lowest carbon footprint possible.

Delivered by their own temperature controlled transport to Glendoick on the same day as dispatch – fresh from the nursery.  Plants are picked and sleeved less than 24 hours prior to delivery, usually same day as delivery

Larger pots and wider spacing is given to plants to produce a superior premium quality plant, plants are pinched higher to give more stems per plant and spaced regularly to give a better rounded shape

They use a bespoke compost recipe containing a slow release fertiliser and extra drainage.

Team of staff dedicated to ensuring the care and quality of the Poinsettias

It is a little known fact that Pentland were one of the first nurseries in the UK to grow the now ubiquitous Poinsettia.  In the early 60’s David Spray’s father Bob read about them in an American journal and had some sent across from Florida.  The majority of their cuttings arrive in July and are potted into various sizes of pots in a very special open compost with lots of food and trace elements included. The plants are grown pot thick for several weeks before pinching.  They are pinched to produce side shoots and spaced out regularly to give a good all round shape. They are placed on sub-irrigated benches which are computer controlled to water and feed the plants on a daily basis. They are grown in a warm, bright, draught free glasshouse and watered and fed until they change colour in November. There are many colours available such as whites, pinks and variegated so they can be kept well after Christmas as a normal houseplant!  All their Poinsettias are grown in their hi-tech nursery meaning all the Poinsettias they offer are grown here in Scotland.  The nursery is heated with their biomass boilers which burn waste wood chips.  This means they have the lowest carbon footprint possible and much lower than those grown in Europe or with oil or gas heating.

So now you know why our Poinsettias are SIMPLY THE BEST!

How to care for your plant.

They need bright, but filtered light, away from strong sun and they hate draughts.

Best with a minimum temperature of 13-15°C (55-59°F) but they can take cool temperatures as long as it is not draughty or fluctuating.

Be careful when transporting poinsettias from the shop to your home in the winter, as the cold outdoor temperatures can damage the foliage. If cold or windy ask for wrap for the plant.

Do not overwater and keep water off the foliage but mist to keep humidity up.

Very hard to get back into flower so usually thrown away after Christmas.
