Open-ground culture of Rhododendrons
While almost all U.K. Rhododendron production is now in containers, Glendoick has resisted the temptation to change from field to pot production. We are convinced that better and more easily-established plants are produced by open ground production methods. Container production forces rootballs into unnatural shapes and pot-bound rhododendrons are hard to establish. In addition, field grown plants are much easier to pack and cheaper to send by post. We have found that many species cannot be produced in containers at all. In addition, we have been able to reduce peat use to a minimum with field production and we estimate that our rhododendron production is the least peat-dependent in the U.K. Glendoick grows tender rhododendrons and evergreen azaleas in pots. Most other rhododendrons and azaleas are grown in the field.
